That list is such a condemnation of the way Zach Spiker used Williams. Spiker didn't know what he had in him. What a waste to limit Williams the way Spiker did. He was the CAA preseason POY, who all of these big programs are coming after now, and Spiker limited him to 12 & 8 in 23 mpg without Williams really being in any foul trouble all year. He should've averaged a double-double with 20 ppg, should've and challenged Thomas for POY, and could've won it like the preseason vote predicted. Spiker used Williams as if he knew all season he was going to lose him and wanted to limit him out of spite (I don't think that's what happened but that's how it looked). It's so key for coaches to identify strengths early on and to make sure their teams play to those strengths.dutchPride86 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 20, 2024 8:29 pm Look at this absurd list of schools that have reportedly reached out to Amari Williams. 7-3 from West Lafayette? How did he not end up at Purdue, even as Edey's backup and eventual replacement? The Boilermakers collect guys like that and he's from their own backyard. Of course, they do also have a 7-2 freshman from Stockholm.Jojogunne wrote: ↑Wed Mar 20, 2024 10:40 pm Rocco Muratori, SBU's 7-3 center, is in the portal:

Re: NCAA 2024 MBB Transfer Portal
It has been said before here about Williams that with that weapon and upside the kind of damage he could do Spiker turned him into a puppet and rarely pulled his strings. I thought the kid looked lost in their offensive sets and probaly Williams became disinterested not being more involved in their offensive plans. A real shame but good for the rest of the league!Wags wrote: ↑Wed Mar 20, 2024 9:21 pmThat list is such a condemnation of the way Zach Spiker used Williams. Spiker didn't know what he had in him. Currently there are 671 tranfers in the Portal...wait until after this weekend when half the teams in the post-season start posting!
Re: NCAA 2024 MBB Transfer Portal
It’s been estimated that a high major basketball team will give out at least a million dollars in NIL for a starting five. Mid-majors like Hofstra can’t compete with that. We’re now the farm system for the big programs. It’s disgusting. The whole idea of the ‘student athlete’ is now total garbage. Greed rules.

Mid-majors are in such trouble in this new landscape. Just no viable way to compete. Power conferences already had key advantages, but with NIL now, the haves vs. have-nots gap will only widen greatly.
Re: NCAA 2024 MBB Transfer Portal
NIL is killing college basketball. Maybe the "student/employees" should pay for their tuition?

To give some perspective an incoming freshman O lineman football player last year said he would play for Alabama and Nick Saban for 800k per year plus he wanted the school to pay for his girlfriends education including her masters
Saban told the recruit to pound sand

No need to worry about scholarships when walk-ons can get paid BIG NIL $$$.stuball888 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 21, 2024 3:27 pm It will only get worse as there is talk of expanding the rosters to 15 players

Wonder if Hofstra will have any interest in Drissa Traore from St John's? Solid size - 6'8 220 forward, believe he has 2 yrs eligibility left. He barely played for them but was only guy besides Soriano Pitino kept. By all accounts great leader and work ethic. From Harlem, was a 3-star out of LuHi
Re: NCAA 2024 MBB Transfer Portal
Would be a nice addition to our team. How much can we afford to pay him.

Re: NCAA 2024 MBB Transfer Portal
We will give him a contract contingent on his performance. How does that sound. The better u play the more $$ you can expect. I wonder what these NIL contracts look like. We now have professional student athletes competing at the college level. What a Pandora's box we opened!
Re: NCAA 2024 MBB Transfer Portal
What Dan Hurley says about how he tries to put his UConn rosters together applies to lower-level teams like Hofstra too:
“It’s hard to be an elite team if it’s all portal or all high school. You’ve got to have a core of guys that return to your program every year that you build around.”
Going forward, the portal will always be crucial. Hofstra will have to continue to find guys like Estrada, Thomas, and Dubar, or something close, to bring in. But they also need to get back to recruiting guys like Agudio, Stokes, Jenkins, and JWF, and if not like that, at least Carlos. The reason they can't get over the top in the CAA is because that has largely dried up since JWF vs. what that used to be for Hofstra. They need to get back to that even if unlike the past (when they stayed for four years) they may lose them after developing them. Like Hurley says, it's hard to be elite if it's all one thing. You need a good mix, whether "elite" at one level or a another means competing for a national championship or a CAA championship.

Wags see my post from 3/19 very similar to yours
Re: NCAA 2024 MBB Transfer Portal
I think we could all agree with that - in theory - but I wonder - if Agudio, Stokes, Jenkins, and JWF would stay in this new transfer world - when the big boys are sniffing in our hen house - offering national exposure and money.Wags wrote: ↑Sat Mar 23, 2024 3:10 pm What Dan Hurley says about how he tries to put his UConn rosters together applies to lower-level teams like Hofstra too:

I come from the world of "it is what it is" - and we are in a new brave world.
But I do believe for the most part we have kept our "core of guys" - Carlos; Dubar (came here as a puppy and stayed until he became a big dog-dog in a good way); Ray (Jaylin); Coburn (similar to Dubar); Pemberton and Buie...

How about a Indiana big that we actually recruited - transferring from Indiana U - big Payton Sparks played more as a Fr/So (at Ball State) then as Jr (at IU) - dont know much about him - type of player; injuries; or if looking to bigger (school) ...Wags wrote: ↑Wed Mar 20, 2024 11:25 pm7-3 from West Lafayette?
