Jack Styczynski

Post by Jojogunne »

I just stumbled upon the following tweet. Have not been able to confirm, but assume it's true, as Jack used to write for Daly Dose of Hoops:

https://twitter.com/DalyDoseOfHoops/sta ... 84545?s=20

I didn't know Jack, but remember his passionate posts on Hofstra's rivals site, including several about the merits of free throws.

Here's an article Jack wrote last year about Coach Wright:

Condolences to Jack's family and friends on their loss.

Jack moderated the precursor to this discussion group, which was part of a forum for all CAA teams (Rivals.com).

Jack was one of the reasons I became a Hofstra fan it was through the rivals
Board where I met uncle Buck and bulls fan among others
Can’t tell you how many tailgates we went to watching Hofstra football And seeing him at the PFC center For basketball games also, we were there for countless men’s lacrosse games

I am sorry to hear of his passing. I remember he was really mad at Pechora leaving fo the Fordham job. Hated that he said Hofstra was his dream job and then left. In hindsight Pechora might agree with Jack. He had Polito like passion and did not pull punches. He let you know how he felt.RIP Jack and condolences to your family. They say that the good people pass around the holidays. Sorry I never met him personally.

Thanks for the info
I would like to go to the funeral, but it’s over three hours away and I just can’t get away from work. Is there anyone that will be going to the funeral?

Very nice obituary. It reminded me that Jack's "day job" was as a researcher for the NY Times. He certainly was not one to sit still. Thanks for the link.

Ugh, very sorry to hear of this. RIP Jack.

The Rivals board was truly historic, an epic place of gritty raw fandom. Perfect for me lol. And back then I was obviously much younger and much more brash - still a student, and a VERY proud one - some of you think I'm a lot now, hahaha, you'd pee your pants. Or try to sue me for being offended on the daily lolol - or cry and whine a lot  Believe me, I've mellowed quite a bit!!

That board was an intoxicating internet boxing ring at times, some great battles and tough as nails convos with the likes of Uncle Buck and Bull Fan, student athlete parents, and of course Jack right up in it, never shied away.

Appreciate all that he did, and he put up with a lot... and as mentioned here, he gave a lot right back too! Loved it. It was awesome to find a place of people with a true passion for HU just like me.

It's certainly the reason why I'm here (blessed to be here as well), and made several wonderful acquaintances and friends that have carried forward - God rest his soul, and prayers to his family and friends during this difficult time.

Another article on Jack with cause of death included which makes news even more awful. Just shows we truly never know the demons some people face. https://dailyvoice.com/new-york/harriso ... on/861306/

Wow that's horrible RIP.

I remember him from posting on the CAAZone, I don't think he ever accepted Hofstra moving to the CAA.

Been so busy in recent weeks, I managed to miss this and I'm very saddened and shocked to only hear of this news now.

I had spoken to Jack several times at Hofstra games over the years and we had some long Twitter IM conversations during the pandemic a couple of years ago but hadn't spoken much since.

I feel bad that I had no idea what was going on. I wish I could have spoken to him and perhaps made a difference but it may not have mattered.

Apparently he was very ill and was really trying very hard to fight toward the end:

Weird for me and some others here that he mentions shooting free throws while sick in his final weeks given his stance on CAAZone board about FTs not mattering so much in wins and losses and myself and others chiming in with the opposite view on that. What trivial nonsense that all seems like in retrospect. But then, it's also not trivial at all. It's those kinds of things that brings all of us together, to help us get to know each other, having fun discussing about a sport we all love even when we don't agree on some finer points of the game.

Although I knew years ago that he has spent time living and working in New Orleans, I also wasn't aware until now that he was so involved helping those in need, including his supervisory role with AmeriCorps. Very well done, Jack.

I hope that however this world works, life, afterlife (if that exists), that he has now forever found peace. May his memory always be a blessing. And for Jack's sake, go Siena!
