Best MBB Teams in the Tri-State Area 2022-23

Post by Jojogunne »

I just looked quickly at the NCAA NET rankings. The top teams in the tri-state area appear to be:

8 UConn
32 Rutgers
58 Iona
80 Seton Hall
86 Hofstra
97 St. John's
138 Fordham

If you want to add a couple more:

66 Yale
117 Princeton

Everyone else is 200 or lower. Charleston (our new rival?) is 51.

As I mentioned in another thread, Keith Urgo, the new Fordham coach, was on NBC's Sports Final last night with Bruce Beck. Urgo appears to be doing an excellent job up on Rose Hill. Besides winning 11 or so Patriot League games this year, he has found a way to attract students to the games:

Amazing that Iona's NET is so much better than ours...and Fordham fattened up on the worst OOC in the country....

Fordham is in the A10. They play Football in the Patriot League. They have the fewest total losses in the A10, but are sixth in the NET among those fifteen schools, which is hard to do. Their NET SOS is 286th, and I wonder where that ranks among the easiest schedules in A10 history. Their only Quadrant 1 games were losses by 19 and 26, and their best win is at Tulane in 94th. 20 of their 29 games were against teams in the bottom half.

Connecticut is near Hartford, Yale is closer to Hartford than to New York City, and Princeton is closer to Philadelphia than New York City. I count Us, Stony Brook, Long Island, St. Francis (Brooklyn), Manhattan, Fordham, Wagner, Columbia, St. John's, Iona, Fairfield, Sacred Heart, Seton Hall, Rutgers, Monmouth, Fairleigh Dickinson, New Jersey Institute of Technology, and St. Peter's as area teams. Those are 18. If you go farther north there are Army and Marist.

FDU will represent the Northeast Conference in the NCAAT, with a first year head coach, no less.

Conference rules prevent NEC newcomer Merrimack, who may win the regular-season title, from advancing to the Big Dance.

So out of 33 conferences they're ranked 32. Will they have to play in?

FDU has the top NET in the NEC in 300th. If they stay in the 300s, I am guessing it will be the first time a conference did not have a team in the top 299. They will play in the First Four, and could be the worst NCAA Tournament team.

The NEC is last of 32 in the Conference NET at https://www.warrennolan.com/basketball/ ... conference which shows Independents below them. The independents are Hartford and Chicago State. Being an Independent made Chicago State play 8 home games and 23 away games.
