MBB Game 24 - Towson, 2/2/23 (Thurs), 7 PM

Post by Jojogunne »

Bring on the Tigers! Towson (16-7) comes to town this week with a gaudy 8-2 league mark. The Tigers almost beat Charleston and lost to Delaware on an off shooting night (sound familiar)?

In their last game, five Tigers scored in double figures in a 24-point rout of William & Mary. Cam Holder, one of three TU preseason first-teamers, had the school's second triple-double ever (the first one coming 10 years ago). Will he and Estrada share CAA POW honors tomorrow?

FloHoops will carry the game.

Towson is a tough matchup for us...they are big and physical and have had our number for quite awhile.
Despite that ESPN gives us a 73 percent chance of winning and according to Sagarin, we should be 5.3 point favorites, most of that line due to their homecourt factor of 5.3 points.
Once again a crucial matchup for us to take over undisputed second place and victories over all the top teams in the CAA...Go Pride!

I remember seeing the home game last year that we lost 78-68 and came away with the feeling that Towson was just a better team. Timberlake went off for 26 points as we really didn't have an answer for him. This is a new year and we have different players at the post and at the guard positions. We certainly appear to be a better team playing with more resolve especially defensively. Hopefully we can finally get a win against them something we didn't do last year.

We need production from our front court to win this game.

https://gohofstra.com/news/2023/1/31/me ... c-win.aspx is titled "Hofstra Hosts Towson Following Historic Win."

https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/side ... game24.pdf is our Game Notes. Estrada is 39th in career points with 1,019. He has 3 fewer than James Shaffer, 26 fewer than Percy Johnson, and 41 fewer than Darius Burton, so Estrada will hopefully by 36th after Saturday. Among transfers in the 2010s who we had for two seasons, Juan'ya Green scored 1,186, Mike Moore scored 1,128, and Ameen Tanksley scored 1,090. Estrada could pass all of them and other players to be 26th going into the CAA Tournament. If we play four games in the CAA Tournament and another tournament combined, he is on pace to end the season 22nd, and with the ninth most points by a Hofstra player in the CAA. Among our CAA players, he would pass Green, Moore, Tanksley, Carlos Rivera, Brian Bernardi, Rokas Gustys, and Nathaniel Lester.

All six CAA games are at 7:00 P.M., and two are on a regional sports network. Northeastern has off. Here are the statistics links and KenPom expectations:

Towson at Us: http://stats.statbroadcast.com/statmonitr/?id=425821
KenPom expects us to win 72-66 with a 69 percent chance of winning

Elon at Stony Brook on SNY: http://stats.statbroadcast.com/statmonitr/?id=428323
KenPom expects Stony Brook to win 69-65 with a 66 percent chance of winning

Delaware at Monmouth: http://stats.statbroadcast.com/statmonitr/?id=426650
KenPom expects Delaware to win 72-63 with a 78 percent chance of winning

Charleston at Drexel on NBC Sports Philadelphia: http://stats.statbroadcast.com/statmonitr/?id=425150
KenPom expects Charleston to win 72-67 with a 67 percent chance of winning

William & Mary at Hampton: http://stats.statbroadcast.com/statmonitr/?id=425747
KenPom expects William & Mary to win 74-73 with a 50 percent chance of winning.

North Carolina A&T at UNCW: http://stats.statbroadcast.com/statmonitr/?id=426897
KenPom expects UNCW to win 74-64 with an 81 percent chance of winning

That's one game with 50 percent, and three games with about two-thirds.

Home teams are 34-30 in CAA games.

https://towsontigers.com/news/2023/2/1/ ... fstra.aspx is titled "TOWSON MEN’S BASKETBALL HEADS TO LONG ISLAND FOR A CAA SHOWDOWN AGAINST HOFSTRA."

https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/side ... ra_2-2.pdf is Towson's Game Notes.

Towson has ten players with at least 15 games, and eight are significant contributors. Sekou Sylla replaced Cameron Holden in the starting lineup, but Holden still plays a lot. Holden is the only Division I player averaging at least 14 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.5 steals. He leads the CAA with 4.7 assists. He is eleventh in scoring, and could finish in the top ten in scoring, rebounds, assists, and steals. Nicolas Timberlake averages 15.9 points in 35.7 minutes. Rahdir Hicks averages only 1.9 points in 19.8 minutes. He averages 2.1 assists and 1.1 steals. Towson averages 2.7 more field goal attempts and 2.4 more free throw attempts than their opponents. Their opponents shoot free throws .751, which is the 26th highest of 363 teams.

Do they have injuries?

3.5 points isn't extreme, and may just account for home court, but they beat us by 20+ points last time on their court so I'm a bit surprised.

I'm also surprised those ESPN %'s are so pronounced... but that probably just speaks to the crappy nature of their prediction model.

Hey HU87 do u really believe that Towson was 21 points better then us or that we were 24 points better then UNCW? The nature of this game when you watch scores day in and day out. If you look at the CAA stats across the board we are similar teams as far as team stats go so this should translate into a close game. No guarantees but common sense would dictate that. We shot something like 16% from three do u think that will happen again? Just the nature of the beast.

I hear you bro but it has happened before. How about we have a three point lead and they hit a two inside the three point line to end the game. I'd rather be in the lead then to have to hit the winning basket as the clock runs out although we have done it numerous times over the years.

They do not have new injuries. Jason Gibson averaged 9.8 points last season. He shot threes .429, which was third in the CAA. This season he averaged 8.7 points in the first three games and did not play after that. He is a senior, but if he takes a redshirt season this season and a fifth season because of COVID, he could play two more seasons.

If Towson ends with the ball, they could miss, get an offensive rebound by the basket, and score like North Carolina A&T did.
