MBB Game 20 - @ Towson, 1/16/23 (Mon), 12 PM

Post by Jojogunne »

Like so many teams this season, Towson (11-7) has been up and down.

In its OOC schedule, Towson beat UMass, hung with Clemson and lost to Navy in OT.

Since then, the Tigers have lost by 2 to Charleston, beat Drexel and SBU, lost to Delaware by 13, and defeated Monmouth today by 20.

Monday's game is on FloHoops.

The games are coming fast and furious this week.
Almost like an NBA schedule. Good Speedy played everyone on Sat...couple of minutes off.
Looks like Towsongot a few pieces back against Monmouth.

It's not SO bad after tomorrow. That's a quick turnaround from yesterday but then they don't have a usual Thu/Sat schedule, only Thu and then off until Thu/Sat the following week, so a chance to catch their breath after tomorrow. But this is a huge stretch coming up, at Towson, vs. UNCW, at Elon, at Charleston, vs. Towson. We'll know after that if they are legit where they are now (top two) or below that, trying to still become a part of that. The encouraging thing is (aside from NC A&T) with the weaker schedule leading into this challenging stretch, they weren't just getting by, they were winning very easily. So, that could be a sign of putting things together in time for this key stretch.

https://gohofstra.com/news/2023/1/15/me ... fstra.aspx is titled "Monday Matinee Awaits Red-Hot Hofstra."

https://s3.amazonaws.com/sidearm.sites/ ... game20.pdf is our Game Notes.

https://towsontigers.com/news/2023/1/15 ... rnoon.aspx is titled "MEN’S BASKETBALL WELCOMES HOFSTRA TO SECU ARENA ON MONDAY AFTERNOON." Nicolas Timberlake made 175 threes, which is second on their career list behind Josh Thornton's 224. Antoine Agudio (357 in four seasons), Jalen Ray (310 in five seasons), Justin Wright-Foreman (277 in four seasons with 273 in his last three seasons), and Brian Bernardi (256 in three seasons) all made more threes than Towson's individual record. Timberlake would be tenth in career threes if they were all for us.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/sidearm.sites/ ... a_1-16.pdf is Towson's Game Notes.

Towson does not know what position Cam Holden plays. I was surprised to read that they were without two starting guards (him and Jason Gibson) because I thought he was a forward. I checked their roster, which lists him as a guard this season and a guard/forward last season. The Game Notes calls him a forward in the Possible Starters/Reserves section, and a guard in the roster section.

Here is the CAA schedule:

Us at Towson at 12:00 P.M. on NBC Sports Washington http://stats.statbroadcast.com/statmonitr/?id=428613 (KenPom expects Towson to win 70-69)

William & Mary at Charleston at 5:00 P.M. http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=424659 (KenPom expects Charleston to win 80-64)

Delaware at Northeastern at 6:00 P.M. on NESN http://stats.statbroadcast.com/statmonitr/?id=426953 (KenPom expects Northeastern to win 71-70)

Elon at UNCW at 7:00 P.M. http://stats.statbroadcast.com/statmonitr/?id=426895 (KenPom expects UNCW to win 77-60)

North Carolina A&T at Hampton at 7:00 P.M. http://stats.statbroadcast.com/statmonitr/?id=425744 (KenPom expects North Carolina A&T to win 77-73)

Monmouth and Stony Brook have off for the second time, and play on the last 13 days with CAA games. Drexel also has off.

http://defiantlydutch.blogspot.com/2023 ... owson.html is Jerry Beach's "I'll Be Quirky: Towson." Hosting Delaware was our first 86-62 win since we won hosting Long Island to start 1960-1961, when we went 21-4. It was the first time since at least 2005-2006 that we swept a season series without trailing in either game. We allowed 62 or fewer points for the fourth consecutive game, which is the first time we did that since December 28, 2014 through January 5, 2015. It was the first time since at least 1988-1989 that we had a tie for our leading scorer in three consecutive games. Petey Galgano and Aidan Best made this the first season that we had two walk-ons score since Adam Savion and Dan Steinberg in 2013-2014. He cited me saying:

"LUCKY THIRTEEN (part two)

Made you wait a while for this one! The Dutchmen used all 13 active players in Saturday’s win. Per Loyal Reader EvanJ, this is the first time 13 players have appeared in a game for the Dutchmen since a 68-52 win over St. Francis (NY) on Dec. 13, 2008. That was 461 games ago!"

Cam Holden's three missed games were because he was suspended for violating team rules. He returned on Saturday.

The four schools formerly in the East Coast Conference will have their standings determined by winning percentage, not wins, because we play Drexel once, while the other five pairs play twice. So far we are 2-0, Towson is 1-1, Delaware is 1-2, and Drexel is 0-1.

We are underdogs by 2.5. The over/under of 135.5 makes a score of 69-66.5. Division I has 40 games today, and we are in one of three that starts at 12:00 P.M.

We are 46-29 (.613) against Towson, but lost both games by double-digits last season. Towson is our third most played opponent behind Delaware and Drexel.

Towson took a 1-0 lead, and we lead 13-3 with 15:18 left in the half. That is with 2 points by Estrada and non by Thomas. It took Towson 3:58 to make a field goal, they used a timeout, and they shot 1-5 with 4 turnovers.

Happy MLK Day, all!

Impressive start from Hofstra, which could have easily started slow with a noon holiday tip after a bus trip and playing less than 48 hours earlier. Let's see how that good start may translate to the game down the stretch.

Oh boy, Towson scores the next 16 to go up, 19-13.

Well, the good start still very important because it keeps them in the game instead of being in big early trouble.

Now 53-30, Towson
That's 50-17, Towson since Hofstra's 13-3 lead.
Brutal. Had high hopes today once I saw the good start, but for all the good they built up over five easy CAA wins, this is a major step backward today - not to lose, but -33 after that good start? That's not even competitive. Hopefully this CAN be chalked up to the difficult, quick turnaround. Will have to prove that on Thursday and over the rest of this tough stretch through the rematch with Towson at home.

I also said after the last game, when they put up 86 without Dubar scoring, that I'm never worried about the offense, that it's always about the D, and I generally still think that. But today it was about the offense. After that good start, they just couldn't score. Finished the first half 2/22 from the floor. In most cases, the offense will be fine and it IS about the D, but we know everyone turns up the D in the CAA tourney and if they run into D like they saw from Towson today, they will need to figure out a lot offensively to avoid today's offensive showing in D.C.

So we were outscored 65-34 - after that lead! That's pretty bad - actually really bad.

That was an atrocious performance all around.
Surprised after a 20 point first half they came out with the same lineup that started the game.

That was a pathetic performance. This team is not who we thought they were. This is in part on Speedy and the staff - this team was not ready to play basketball.

Agree cactus. Just embarrassing!
Back to the old HU, never know what you're going to get from game to game.

Have to find a way to score when the 3 isn't falling (going to the line when that happens would be nice).

Nearly half (27) of their shots (61) were from 3. They made only FOUR of those 27 (Estrada 0/10, Thomas 1/7, Dubar 1/5).

Yet they only went to the line SIX times and only two HU players went to the line. They can get away with that fine when they're hitting the 3, but when they're not, and when they're not turning defense into easy offense, they get burned with chucking up missed 3 after missed 3. So, 4/27 from 3 today, with no other plan offensively, resulted in a season-low 47 points (even less than the 48 they scored at SMC) and a 21-point loss.

Estrada was the only HU player in double figures (barely, with 10 pts). He went 5/7 from 2, and the aforementioned 0/10 from 3). He can usually git the 3, but today he didn't have it. Someone has to tell him in-game: why not recognize that, especially when you're known as Mr. Mid-Range, you're making your 2s, you haven't hot a 3, why so many 3s?

Perhaps the only plus other than the very good start before it all went to crap thereafter: Carlos continues to shoot much better than he had last year and in some earlier games this year. He made his only 3-pt attempt (maybe the trio above should have given some of theirs to him?), went 4/7 overall, and just missed (by only a point) scoring in double figures for a fourth straight game and for what would have been the seventh time this year (he didn't score more than six in any game last year).

Maybe the legs weren't there with the quick turnaround and bus trip. If that's all it was, prove it on Thursday. Turn the page, another big opportunity against UNCW next, another against Charleston, and a chance to pay Towson back, all coming up soon. Let's see if they adjust and rebound from this.

If the legs weren't there after a day off, they will never win 3 in 3 at the CAA tourney!!

Sometimes a bus ride of a few hours can affect that. In D.C., that wouldn't be an issue for the second and third games.
