We're on a 12-0 run, and Silverio made a three to go up 45-42, which were his first points since 21:33 ago. Aftering calling timeout, Delaware scored to go down 45-44.

Hens 1/8 from 2, but 8/14 from 3. HU still can't guard the 3 effectively. Gonna be their undoing this season if they don't fix that.
Delaware closed the first half 20-5, extended that to 27-7, starting the second half 7-2 (to lead 42-33).

But defense coming alive and turning into offense for HU: ignited a 12-0 run to take the lead back, 45-42.

Make it a 25-2 Hofstra run after a 4-pt play from Silverio, a Ray 3, an Estrada layup off of a steal and ast from Ray and two Ray tech FTs. Pride up 58-44.

I've been critical of Ray for his no-shows, like the last game at Towson. So, wanna make sure I say today: he's been supremely efficient.

Game-high-matching 20 pts (Estrada) on 6/8 fg, 4/5 from 3, 4/4 FT. And he's been very good defensively in this second half. THAT is the Ray we need to see on a CONSISTENT basis going forward.

Now 19-6, Delaware brings the Hens within 68-67.
Some wild swings in this one. Microcosm of the vast inconsistency in Hofstra's season.

Ray with a huge right corner 3. He has come up hug in this game. 75-50, HU.

Anderson though, at the other end. 75-72, with under two left.

p.s. Northeastern about to go to 0-5 in CAA play. Losing its first CAA home game late to Drexel.

Nice to see Simmons on the court. Great game from Estrada, per usual.

Played no defense, we got lucky to get hot. Not impressed overall.

Its already halfway thru the season. I dont think much is going to change. We are who we are. A team that needs to outscore the other team. Inconsistant on both sides of the ball. When we are good we can play with anyone. When we are bad we beat ourselves. Estrada and Ray played lights out. Dubar and ioyila bearly showed. Omar was OK at best and we got nothing from Carlos and Burgess. Simmons did little but foul out but it was his first game back. We NEED Cooks to return and be the sparkplug.

Better defense than we played vs. Towson. Delaware tough to guard. We were doubling their bigs down low so they started making threes. We play them straight up and our bigs got in four trouble.

Liked what Simmons dis defensively…a little overly aggressive but he got some nice stops.

And for those of you who think we played no D, how many turnovers did we force and how many points did we score off of turnovers.

That was the ball game folks,

That was the ball game folks,
19 turnovers for 35 points. I put this at the beginning so you can find out without reading my whole post.

Estrada made 12 of 15 twos. He continued to struggle shooting threes by missing all 3. He shoots twos .583 and threes .256. He made all 6 free throws, and had 6 assists, 3 steals, and only 1 foul and 1 turnover. Ray shot 7-10 to score 23. He made 5 of 7 threes, and 2 of three twos. He made all 4 free throws, and has 3 assists and 3 steals. Silverio scored 15 in 5 possessions with 4 threes including a four-point play and 1 two. He had 4 rebounds and 2 steals, but bad statistics of 3 fouls and 4 turnovers. Dubar shot field goals 2-5 and free throws 4-5 to score 8. He had 5 rebounds and 4 fouls. Iyiola shot 1-2 and field goals 2-4 to score 4. He had 5 rebounds in the first 3:40, and only 1 after that. He committed 4 fouls. Simmons shot 1-2 for his first points and attempts of the season. His other positive contributions were 1 rebound and 1 steal. He fouled out in 12 minutes. I'm okay with playing two forwards at once, but even if Iyiola, Cramer, and Simmons are all available, two of them won't play together if they get in foul trouble. Burgess shot 0-2 with no free throw attempts. He had 5 rebounds and 2 assists, but his 3 turnovers make his assist/turnover much worse. Carlos shot 0-3 with no free throw attempts, and his only positive contributions were 2 assists. The bench scored 25 in 57 minutes, which is more points per minute than the starters, but that's because Ray didn't start. Normal bench players Burgess, Carlos, and Simmons scored 2 in 41 minutes.

Delaware had five players score double-digits, Kevin Anderson scored 8, and nobody else scored. Forwards Dylan Painter and Andrew Carr tied for the team lead with 15 points. Painter shot 3-4 including making his only three, and a majority of his points came from making 8 of 10 free throws. He had 10 rebounds for the only double-double on either team. He had 3 assists, 1 block, 3 fouls, and 4 turnovers. Delaware was +12 in his 34 minutes, so we were +17 in the 6 minutes with him on the bench. Carr was -19 in 32 minutes, so Delaware was +14 in his 8 minutes on the bench. Carr shot 6-10 and had 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 fouls. Jameer Nelson Jr. had 14 points including 3 threes, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Ryan Allen had 13 points including 3 threes, 3 assists, and 4 turnovers. Ebby Asamoah scored 12 by making 4 of 8 threes without attempting a two or free throw. He entered today with 42 of his 52 attempts being threes. He had 7 rebounds, and his last rebound was useless at the first half buzzer. He had 4 fouls and 3 turnovers. Kevin Anderson had 8 points, 8 assists, and 2 steals, but had 4 fouls and 4 turnovers. Reggie Gardner Jr., Jyare Davis, and Wes Peterson combined to have 1 rebound and 2 fouls in 8 minutes.

We shot field goals .500, including twos .633 and threes .346. We shot free throws 17/20 = .850. Delaware shot .480, including twos .550 and threes .433. They made 2 of 9 twos in the first half, and 9 of 11 twos in the second half. 60 percent of their 50 attempts were threes. They shot free throws .727, which is worse than their average. Our 24 rebounds were 10 fewer than Delaware, but we made up for it with 9 fewer turnovers, 19 to 10. That led to a giant advantage in points off turnovers, 35 to 10. We had a great ratio of 17 assists to 10 turnovers. Delaware had 21 assists and 19 turnovers. We had way more steals, 12 to 4. Dylan Painter had the only block for either team. Delaware had more second chance points (8 to 3), we had more fast break points (12 to 3), and each team had 22 points in the paint. We led for 29:16, Delaware led for 8:58, and it was tied for 1:46.

Analytics:
Efficiency, game score, and net points agree that Estrada was our best player, and Ray was our second best player. Delaware was led by Dylan Painter, who was third behind Estrada in efficiency and game score, and second behind Estrada in net points. Net points is not +/- while the player was on the court.

Here are how our statistics changed:

Cooks: No longer qualifies, he will qualify after three more games if he plays in all of them

Estrada: 14.9 to 15.8 points, .436 to .454 field goal percentage, 5.6 to 5.4 rebounds, remains at 4.8 assists but increased from 4.75 to 4.82, 1.4 to 1.5 steals

Ray: 14.8 to 15.3 points, .401 to .419 field goal percentage, .425 to .442 three-point field goal percentage, 4.3 to 4.0 rebounds, 1.6 to 1.7 assists, 0.9 to exactly 1 steal

Dubar: 12.5 to 12.2 points, remains at 5.5 rebounds but decreased from exactly 5.5 to 5.47

Silverio: 11.5 to 11.7 points

Iyiola: 9.1 to 8.7 points, 9.1 to 8.8 rebounds

Carlos: 1.5 to 1.4 points, .269 to .241 field goal percentage, 1.5 to 1.6 assists

Burgess: 1.2 to 1.1 points, 1.1 to 1.3 rebounds, remains at 2.6 rebounds but decreased from exactly 2.6 to 2.56

Simmons: 0 to exactly 1 point, remains at exactly 1 rebound, exact 5 to 8.5 minutes, exactly 1 to exactly 3 fouls

Team (us/opponents):
Field goal percentage: .460 to .462/.443 to .445
Three-point field goal percentage: .3419 to .3421/.371 to .375
Free throw percentage: .790 to .795/.7260 to .7261
Rebounds: 34.7 to 34.1/36.3 to 36.2
Assists: 16.1 to 16.2/15.4 to 15.6
Steals: 7.8 to 8.1/5.44 to 5.35
Blocks: 3.1 to 2.9/2.7 to 2.6
Fouls: 13.9 to 14.3/15.3 to 15.5
Turnovers: 10.19 to 10.18/14.9 to 15.1
Assists/turnovers: 1.58 to 1.59/1.03 to 1.04

Drexel used only two bench players, but it was enough for a 76-68 win at Northeastern. Camren Wynter had 26 points and 9 assists. James Butler did not play, and sub forward Amari Williams had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Nikola Djogo led Northeastern with 19 points and 8 rebounds. Jahmyl Telfort had 18 points and 7 rebounds.

Towson led 49-40 at Elon, but it's now 49-49. With 3:23 left, Elon missed a three that hit the rim and went over the backboard to cause a media timeout. W&M went up 23 with 5:38 left in the first half. With 8:19 left, they lead 71-61 hosting JMU.

That was the ball game folks,
I don't know what game they were watching. Inconsistent D? Bad stretches of D? Absolutely. But no D? Hardly. That decisive 25-2 second-half run was BUILT on good D turning into offense as well as some other good stretches today that featured good defense. This team CAN play D when they focus on it. They DON'T have to simply outscore teams to win. They have to keep the D up 40asASas as much as they can for 40 minutes, game in and game out. That's the thing.

Silverio still needs to be reeled in. He shouldn't be taking nearly half of the team's 3s (12 of HU's 26) when he's only making a third of what he takes (made 4 3s today), but his timing was great. What he made, were big shots. Turned a 5-1 lead into 11-1 on two 3s, which helped keep it only a four-point game at halftime the way Delware closed the half on a big run. He gave them the lead for good, at 45-42, on a 3, and he had the big 4-point play with the 3 + the FT to turn a close one-possession game into a more comfortable seven-point lead, a play that energized the whole team, during the 25-2 HU run.

Speedy said Cooks won't be back for Drexel on Monday, but will for Northeastern on Sat 1/22.

Contrast this against Delaware's 10 points off 10 Hofstra turnovers - HUGE 35-10 advantage in Points Off Turnovers.

Evan mentioned this later on in his post above, but for the same reason Evan highlighted the 35 pts off 19 TOs, I just want to reiterate the 35-10 disparity because it's what Speedy said he wanted to do when he first took the job - forcing TOs and getting easy buckets while taking care of the ball and limiting the same for the opponent - and today was the perfect example of it.

https://gohofstra.com/news/2022/1/15/me ... aware.aspx is our recap titled "MBB: Estrada Pours In Career-Best 30 As Hofstra Holds Off Delaware."

https://gohofstra.com/boxscore.aspx?pat ... l&id=11478 is the box score. The attendance was 1,465, which is bad for a weekend against a rival.

https://bluehens.com/news/2022/1/15/men ... 82-77.aspx is Delaware's recap titled "Hofstra Uses Big Second Half Run To Defeat Blue Hens, 82-77."

W&M's largest lead was 38-15. JMU took their first lead with 2:24 left in regulation. With JMU up 1 in overtime, W&M's announcers said JMU should have been called for a foul while trying for an offensive rebound. There wasn't a call, and Vado Morse made a 3 to go up 4. W&M's Yuri Covington shot 9-12 and led all players with 29. Teammate Julian Lewis shot 2-8 and had more turnovers (7) than points (6). W&M had 25 turnovers, which helped JMU have 17 more field goal attempts. JMU had three players score over 20. Justin Amadi shot 11-15 and had 24 points and 10 rebounds. Vado Morse had 22 points and 4 assists. Charles Falden had 21 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. Each team had 2 players foul out.

The standings are:

UNCW 2-0
Towson 3-1
JMU, Drexel, and W&M 2-1
Hofstra and Delaware 2-2 and Charleston 1-1
Elon 1-3
Northeastern 0-5

Every team plays on Monday. Then the Thursday-Saturday starts. We have off on Thursday before playing at Northeastern on Saturday. After games at Charleston and UNCW, we will have 6 of 8 games away, and we end with 4 home games. February 16 will start 18 (17 if we stink and have to play in the 8-9 game) consecutive days without an away or neutral game.
