Game 3 - @Iona, 11/16/21, 7 PM EST

Post by Jojogunne »

Can we make it two in a row? Iona is 2-0 and leads the Hofstra series 21-20:

Another tough road game for the Pride. Last year Pitino schooled us by pressing us the entire game.

Think we're much better this year with the ball thanks to the addition of Cooks and Estrada.

Wish we know more about Ray and Simmons...timeline for return?

According to Sagarin this should be a 2 point games with the home team the fav.

Love to see us pull this one off!

Two of their three leading scorers ARE BIG BOYS. Nelly Junior Joseph is 6'9 240 and Dylan Van Eyck is 6'8 220. Joseph is averaging 20 pts. and VanEyck 16.5 after two games. These guys could be problematic for us especially Joseph who will be a handful for Iyiola. Iyiola will have to stay out of foul trouble while we need to get Joseph into foul trouble but probably our guard play that will determine the outcome of the game.

Nelly is the real deal, he's got some Jameel Warney to his game. What's more, he can get to the line and hit shots. Tough matchup for us but I'm not sure who they have that can stay in front of Cooks. Another good game on the schedule, would be a great win but will also be a good test either way.

Cooks has the talent to be an honorable mention AA. You heard it here first

Joe, that's a big time statement, and I dig it! I was going to say I think Cooks might be the player in the NY metro, and will be the best player on the floor in this game.

That said, this is going to be a VERY tough game. Iona will eat HU's lunch in the post. But to counter I fully agree RP15, they have no counter for Cooks - this kid is incredible.

I can't stand that Pitino took the first game, that may have been our best shot to get him - this team is seasoned and deep - just beat Harvard at home in OT.

Not unbeatable though. But I sure would feel a lot better with Ray and Simmons. W/out them is going to be extremely difficult. I think HU is going to need BIG games from Estrada, Dubar, and Iyiola. Cooks is a bonafide star, but he can't do it by himself. So far HU has been fairly balanced compared to it's past when it has a star guard, so that's a good sign.

HU is also playing much better D with much better focus and intensity than it has in YEARS, and that's where HU give itself a great chance to win in every game.

Big time mid major matchup that deserves more attention that it will get. Get nasty Speedy and team, this is for local bragging rights and revenge. ROLL PRIDE

Iona 4.5 to 5 point favorites according to various Vegas betting sites.

Ray will be back in due course...the silver lining is not so much Cooks, who would have flourished regardless, but the other player development that has filled the void. We should have good scoring depth when Ray returns. More concerned about Simmons at this point

That's a tough line. Unless games go down to one possession, it's hard to keep a game near 4 points because of end game fouls. More likely to see an 8 point game, but in reality, neither team is 8 points better than the other.

5.5 on Yahoo. If Iyiola gets into foul trouble who comes in for him? That kid Joseph averaged 33 + minutes in the first two games so when Iyiola needs a breather again who comes in to guard Joseph. If he starts running wild we will double down on him I'd imagine then someone will be open for good looks either way a loser for us.

Dubar and Cramer will see some time against him...does anyone KNOW if Simmons is out? I see our guards and speed giving them fits...if they want to slow it down and pound the post that's fine but Pitino doesn't like to play that way.

I like our chances even without Ray and Simmons...we will give them a good game...looking forward to it!

On the Iona boards they are saying that Ray is going to play according to an unamed sports writer....interesting how they have that information and we don't.

Maybe we should ask them about Simmons...LOL!

The only thing I have heard on Simmons was from the Duquesne announcers last game who said they spoke with Speedy who indicated it was an injury keeping him out weeks. So seems unlikely he will be playing today.

Received this from the Iona fan who posted that he heard Ray will be back.

https://twitter.com/hoopsnut351/status/ ... 94182?s=21

This is the link he was basing it off of. He also mentioned to me the following:

“Greg Peterson who posts a gambling podcast also mentioned Ray is returning "from a few reports". We will see tonight.”

Obviously not the most trustworthy sources but hey fingers crossed!

On the pregame show, the WRHU announcers said that Simmons will be out for another month.

Not unexpected - they said "a few weeks" after the Houston game.

They miss him tonight. Bad start with Iona's size advantage helping the Gaels at each end. 12-2, Iona, almost four minutes in.

Estrada finally hits HU's first 3 after the Pride missed its first six and trailed, 16-4... but then they immediately gave up a 3 at the other end to cancel that out.
19-7, Gaels. At least Joseph is out of the game with 2 PFs, but HU has to take advantage of that now.
