Our 2016 NIT Loss to a George Washington and Their Scandal

Post by EvanJ »

As a fan of George Washington (not as much as Hofstra), I am disappointed to read https://deadspin.com/the-real-story-beh ... 830223615/ with many allegations against former AD Patrick Nero (who was commissioner of the America East before that) and former Men's Basketball coach Mike Lonergan. Nero was accused of sexually aggressive behavior, excessive drunkenness, wanting to masturbate to video of players practicing, and having relationships with players including paying them. Lonergan was accused of calling a referee a "fa**ot." In 2016, they won the NIT, including beat Hofstra in the First Round. The AD and coach hated each other. When they celebrated winning the NIT at Madison Square Garden, Nero wasn't there. In September 2016, Lonergan was fired without being able to take his stuff from his office. When Nero wrote about 2016 sports accomplishments, he included cross country and water polo but not the NIT title because he didn't want to praise anything Lonergan did. It was their first NCAA or NIT win. Nero won AD of the year in 2016, and Assistant Coach Steve Bonavita tweeted that Nero is a "sexual predator & scumbag" on November 11, 2016. An anonymous person provided video of Nero stimulating sex to a player at a game. In December 2017, Nero was fired. There was no announcement of the firings being done for bad behavior, and nothing about an NCAA investigation, but paying a player is a violation.

Edit: Collin Goss, who was a freshman at George Washington in 2015-2016 and scored 1 point in 41 minutes, transferred to Delaware, and he scored 9 in Delaware's 73-56 win at Cornell tonight.
