Hofstra applies for 2016 debate

Post by HofstraPride1 »

Hofstra was among 16 applications for one of the four 2016 debates (three presidential, one VP). Hopefully our strong track record of hosting the last two combined with our location next to the media capital of the world will allow us to host again.

President Rabonowitz had an OpEd piece in Newsday defending universities hosting debates. He made some very good points in the article.

Agreed. Horrible idea to think of not doing these debates on college campuses and am glad our president wrote about this.

Hofstra did not get the 2016 debate. Instead, they are the backup location should something happen at any of the 4 selected locations.

usually the presidential debates are not held at the same venue three times in a row.I do not remember any school having the debates three consecutive times. Hofstra has done a fantastic job hosting the event and I expect they have a good chance in 2024.

Why not 2020?

I believe that 2020 will go to the schools who hold the debates in 2016 provided they do a good job. I think they want to give different parts of the country exposure to the debates. I predicted that Hofstra would not get the debates in 2016 back in 2012 and I took a lot of heat for that.

Like you are, I am not surprised that we are not hosting the debate in 2016, however, I disagree with you in the fact that I think we have a very good chance in 2020. The only other school in the country to host 2 consecutive debates in Washington University in St. Louis, and they served as the back up location in 2012 after hosting in 2008. They are once again hosting this year.
Other than us WU and Hofstra, most schools do not apply for consecutive debate years. These are the schools that applied for 2012: http://www.debates.org/index.php?mact=N ... eturnid=80
That year, the hosts were us, Denver, Centre College, and Lynn University. None of those schools applied to host again in 2016. There were only a few schools that applied for both the 2012 and 2016 debates. Here are the 2016 applicants: http://www.debates.org/index.php?page=2016debates

The main reason I think most schools do not want to host debates, at least consecutively is the cost. Per the NY Times, each debate cost Hofstra about $4.5 million dollars. For many schools, that's a lot of money to be shelling out every four years.

Per that same article, David Mack donated most of the money for the 2012 debate.

Money was never the issue foe Hofstra. The committee just wanted another venue. I am sure they were pleased with the job Hofstra did.

I'm dissappointed we didn't get it for 2016, but feel cautiously optimistic that the fact we were picked as backup site bodes well for 2020. Washington Univ. was backup site in 2012 and landed 2016 debate.
