A.J. English Scored 45 In A Loss

Post by EvanJ »

Iona's A.J. English scored 45 points tonight, and it wasn't his highest scoring game of the season. He scored 46 on December 1. Iona's sixth longest active home winning streak ended at 26 games according to ESPN and 27 games according to http://warrennolan.com/basketball/2016/stats. Although I can't look this up, I wonder if a team has ever had a player score at least 45 players in a game in which the team ended their home winning streak of at least 26 games. Jordan Washington scored 21 points, and then slapped Chris Brady in the face after the game as the players didn't get along. Monmouth won 110-102, and Iona got their first MAAC loss of the season. Monmouth scored 66 in the second half. Monmouth is 23rd in the RPI. To put 45 points into perspective, no Hofstra player has had two 45 point games in a season, and Hofstra's last 45 point game was by Steve Nisenson in early 1965.

Edit: A.J. English had 45 points, 4 assists, 7 steals, and 9 turnovers. No NBA players has had at least 45 points, at least 4 assists, at least 7 steals, and at least 9 turnovers since at least 1985-1986.

Monmouth snapped Iona's 26 game win streak at home, which was one of the longest in the nation. Tim Cluess took a lot of criticism for essentially calling the Monmouth bench players "cheerleaders". Some of the comments in the article are pretty entertaining.
