Around The CAA

Post by ProudofPride »

The CAA for the most part is off to a fantastic start. Several P5 wins, and a couple of A-10 wins. William and Mary beat NC State, we beat FSU, NU beat Miami, and CofC just beat LSU. UNCW has a chance later this month to make some noise against Georgetown, and NU hosts MSU. Also tonight, Elon was down by 8 against Kennesaw State with 19 seconds left, and managed to tie the game and win in overtime. If Drexel wasn't a bottom dweller right now, the CAA would probably be the highest ranked mid-major conference this season.

Drexel I believe has not won a game this year. One of their losses was to Alaska of Anchorage.

You used the term P5. Football has a P5, but basketball has a P6 (the football P5 and the Big East which doesn't exist for football). Here are the Top 10 conferences in the Conference RPI other than the P6:

1. Atlantic 10
2. Mountain West (was third ahead of four P6 conferences in 2012-2013 but did worse than usual in 2014-2015)
3. American Athletic (has Connecticut who used to be in the Big East)
4. CAA
5. Big West (doing better than usual)
6. Horizon League (used to have Butler)
7. Mid-American
8. Summit League
9. Missouri Valley (doing worse than usual, has Indiana State who beat Hofstra)
10. Sun Belt

If you took out Drexel, the CAA would move up one spot on that list. The Atlantic 10 and Mountain West are the only conferences above that are above at least one P6 conference now. Conference USA (which used to have Memphis) and the West Coast (which has Gonzaga, St. Mary's and Brigham Young) are off to disappointing starts and are in the bottom half of the Conference RPI.

The CAA has the second best change in Conference RPI rank from last season to this season. The SWAC was 32nd (last) last season and is now 20th. The CAA was 19th last season and is now 10th.

James Madison (63-57 over Western Michigan) and Delaware (67-58 over South Florida) both won despite shooting the ball poorly. Out of the 15 players on one of those teams who attempted a field goal, only 2 of them made more than half their field goals, and 1 of those 2 had only 1 attempt. James Madison and Delaware combined to have a field goal percentage of .333 (exactly 1/3rd) and a three-point field goal percentage of .267 (exactly 4/15ths).

The CAA now has an OOC vs. Division I winning percentage of .6102.

The CAA is tied for the sixth highest percentage of teams above .500 against Division I teams. The CAA has a higher percentage of teams above .500 against Division I teams than the Big East and Big Ten.

UNC Wilmington was down by as much as 25. Delaware was down 65-53 when they got an offensive rebound with 5:15 left. Cazmon Hayes scored 2 with 5:09 left to go down 65-55. Kory Holden scored 10 of Delaware's 12 points in 3:17. Anthony Mosley made 1 out of 2 free throws to tie the game with 55 seconds left, and Marist made 1 out of 2 free throws with 46 free throws left to go up 69-68. Cazmon Hayes made a two-pointer with 27 seconds left which made the score 70-69 which was the final, sending Marist's home fans home mad.

South Carolina beat Drexel 79-54 last night. The game was much closer in the first half, as it went to halftime with South Carolina only up 32-28. Drexel led by as much as 6 late in the first half. Our largest lead the entire game with SC was by 1 point.

Elon made 18 out of 40 three-pointers in their 91-74 win over Alabama State. Both the makes and attempts are more than Hofstra has ever done.

The CAA currently has 6 players with an assist/turnover ratio of at least 2 after having 1 player do that 2014-2015, 1 player in 2013-2014, 2 players in 2012-2013, 2 players in 2011-2012, 3 players in 2010-2011, 4 players in 2009-2010, 4 players in 2008-2009, 3 players in 2007-2008, 2 players in 2006-2007, 2 players in 2005-2006, and an average of 2.4 players per season do that for the ten seasons from 2005-2006 to 2014-2015.

Towson blew it and lost 69-68 at Fairleigh Dickinson, who entered the game 2-6, and they play in the Northeast Conference, which started the night last in the Conference RPI.

After starting off the season 5-0 but not really playing anyone decent, UNCW finally played good teams and is now on a 3 game losing streak, dropping games to Gerogetown, East Carolina, and Radford.
Northeastern got smoked by Michigan State, and Miami blew out Charleston.

Elon and William & Mary were the only CAA teams to play tonight and they both beat Big South teams. http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=106029 mistakenly says William & Mary finished the game with -1 timeout left. The CAA is up to 9th in the Conference RPI found at http://warrennolan.com/basketball/2016/conferencerpi at .5214, ahead of the Mountain West and Summit League at .5212 each. The America Athletic is a little ahead of that at .5228. The CAA could be back down to 11th by the end of the night. Being ahead of the Mountain West is a big deal considering the Mountain West has these accomplishments:

San Diego State got a 4 seed in 2014
Got 5 teams in the 2013 NCAA Tournament, more than the ACC and SEC
Got an average of 3.5 teams in the last six NCAA Tournaments

This is on the csnbbs boards from a UNCW fan. Pretty good opinion on how teams rank so far.

"Here's how I would rank the CAA teams right now. I've seen at least bits and pieces of all 10 teams to this point so I'm not going solely on the numbers.

NOTE: All W-L records are vs. D-I only.

1. W&M (5-3)

Key wins: NC State (# 91 ), High Point (# 166)
Bad loss(es): @ Howard (# 231)

The Tribe had a close call @ Dayton and also battled in a loss @ Virginia in addition to their impressive resume. I think we can effectively call the Howard game a fluke. Several guys have stepped up with the departure of Marcus Thornton: Omar Prewitt and Daniel Dixon are becoming stars in this league alongside the steady-handed Terry Tarpey.

2. Northeastern (6-4)

Key wins: @ Miami (# 18), Stony Brook (# 104)
Bad loss(es): @ Miami OH (# 257), @ Western Michigan (# 268)

I have to give the defending champs the benefit of the doubt here. 7 of their 10 games this season have been on the road or at a neutral site, taking some of the sting out of the Miami (OH) and Western Michigan losses. Much like the Tribe, NU had to fill a big hole in Sean Eatherton, but keep on chugging. David Walker and Quincy Ford have been fantastic.

3. James Madison (8-3)

Key wins: @ Richmond (# 58), @ Radford (# 162)
Bad loss(es): Tennessee-Martin (# 252)

I have gone on the record quite often saying I'm not a fan of Matt Brady. But its hard to dispute the results so far this season. The Dukes are currently, quietly, riding a 7-game winning streak. While none of those wins have been against teams in the Top 150 in the RPI, collectively they're pretty impressive. Ron Curry and the return of Yohanny Dalembert (missed first 2 games with a foot injury) have been crucial for them, and make an impressive 1-2 punch.

4. Hofstra (5-4)

Key wins: Florida St. (# 138), @ Saint Bonaventure (# 96)
Bad loss(es): NONE

Another team whose coaching doesn't impress me, the Pride simply have too much talent to ignore. Ameen Tanksley and Juan'Ya Green were 2 of the best players in the league last year and have continues right where they left off. Hofstra has had no losses to sub-200 RPI teams this year and are a safe bet to finish somewhere in the top 4-5 in the league. Hofstra is basically interchangable with JMU in my mind, so don't read much into the Pride being ranked below them.

5. UNCW (3-3)

Key wins: NONE
Bad loss(es): NONE

Yes, pure homer pick putting us in this slot, as we have a ton to prove. But our 3-game losing streak does not take away from the fact that we're still among the nation's leaders in turnover margin, which is a very important statistic in today's game. We also are the only team in the league that can say we use 12 different players without a significant dropoff in play when anyone comes off the floor. This will prove valuable. After earning a share of the regular season title last year, I'd say we've also earned the benefit of the doubt.

6. Charleston (6-3)

Key wins: LSU (# 162)
Bad loss(es): NONE

Our resident Charleston fan admits his team is very young, but I do think he sells them short all the same. Coach Keatts was very complimentary of their talent last year, and it is showing great flashes this season. Canyon Barry is having a monster season, with Cam Johnson an effective sidekick. They do have difficulty with the full court press, but are still turning it over less (129) than their opponents (154).

7. Elon (7-3)

Key wins: @ UNC Asheville (# 143), Alabama St. (# 138)
Bad loss(es): NONE

Elon is the true surprise team in the league this year after losing Elijah Bryant. Perhaps the freshman standout was a selfish player? In any case, the current Phoenix 6-game winning streak began with a thrilling victory over Kennesaw St., where Elon was down 8 with 16 seconds left, but a layup by Elon, followed by 2 missed free throws, an Elon 3, another turnover, and a fouled three point shooter in Luke Eddy (who made all 3 FT's made to tie the game) pushed it to overtime, and Elon ended up winning 103-93. They then reeled off 5 more wins and are set up to face Duke on the 28th.

8. Delaware (5-4)

Key wins: NONE
Bad loss(es): NONE

Technically losing @ Boston College could be considered a "bad loss" considering how poorly BC has played this year, but for our purposes we will not count it as such. So far Delaware has been "so-so", and its hard to tell how well they'll compete. Then again, starting slow is nothing new for Monte Ross's Blue Hens: They started 1-13 last season only to finish with a 9-9 conference record. Talent is not an issue for the Hens, as Kory Holden, Cazmon Hayes and Marvin King-Davis are a formidable trio.

9. Towson (6-4)

Key wins: George Mason (# 195)
Bad loss(es): @ La Salle (# 302)

It's hard to believe the Tigers are this low despite already totaling 6 wins, but that's how good the league is top to bottom this year. The Tigers have arguably the best frontcourt in the conference, with Wake Forest transfer William Adala Moto, John Davis, and a host of other big men hauling in a ton of rebounds this year.

10. Drexel (1-7)

Key wins: NONE
Bad loss(es): San Diego (# 287), D-II Alaska-Anchorage

On paper, Drexel's resume isn't as bad as their record indicates. They've played a very competitive non-conference schedule (Bruiser always does a good job at scheduling tough games), with 4 of their 7 losses coming against top-100 RPI teams. Still, the Dragons absolutely are not passing the eye test this year, with their style of play being the main culprit. Their physical play is just the type of style the NCAA is trying to remove from college basketball, and the Dragons aren't adjusting well. Major Canady's potential season-ending injury isn't helping matters either."

Elon had seven players score in double-digits. All of their players scored 0, 10, 12, 13, or 14. It must be very rare to have nobody score in single-digits.

Edit: The Northeastern player was Scott Eatherton, not Sean Eatherton.
