Not just THIS team, it's basketball in general. I've been saying this here and on CAAZone for years!!

Blame SportsCenter. Kids grow up watching highlights of 3 and dunks. That's all they see, so driving to the hoop, mid-range shots, free throws, other fundamentals have suffered over time. Even a team like the Houston Rockets, which takes (and makes) a ridiculous amount of 3s, makes it a point to also attack and get to the rim. You have to make an opposing defense work. Settling for missed jumper after missed jumper makes it easy on them, which gives them more energy on offense, which makes your team have to work harder on defense, which... gives you less energy to work offensively. Basketball is not a hard game. What's hard is putting egos aside, and staying committed to the things that make sense and win games: Moving the ball, keeping several players involved offensively, attacking the rim and not settling too often, rebounding and bringing the effort defensively. Every team, every player, every coach knows this. And yet, only the best stay committed to it and don't stray from it.

I suggested if they wanted to change the name they could have used the nickname Dutch and our womens teams would be called the Lady Dutch. He seemed to like that idea.
I always thought rather than being a PC thing, it was a financial thing... an easy tie-in to the Hofstra Pride Club, which they already had all the logos for and members donating money through already.

I can't imagine that one player, usually ST, gets blamed for blowing a defensive assignment - on this team - a JAM team - defensive assignment? I would think you'd have do something really bad to miss something on our team defensively.
Great game EP and RG!!!

Ok time to play the big boys Saturday...that will tell us a great deal about this team...defend home court, get even with Charleston and we could have some fun this season.
Like this HUSID AND I couldn't agree more after Pemberton hit his first shot he was playing with a lot of confidence and they were feeding him both Buie and JWF. I'm sure Justin was breathing a little easier not having to be the offense in this game. This was a game from a fans standpoint that was really enjoyable to watch. ROK having a really impressive game and clearly showing Cacock who rules the roost!! I had the pleasure of conversing with HS parents who now sit behind me taking the seats of the Bernardi's. They would agree with a lot of the postings here about promotions and our favorite "RAG SHEET" the Newsday. Also chatted with Rood as we all walked out and he told me he would get on the boards soon but told me not to get too carried away with this win because this team(UNCW) isn't that good. I'll take some exception to this because they have played a lot of close games lately losing by 3/4 points to COC,NE and W&M while beating ELON and Towson. Rood we're waiting for your insight before the COC game This is not the worst team in this league so for me a statement win and momentum heading into what hopefully will be an epic battle on Saturday. THE DUTCHMEN ARE IN THE GAME!!

He had consecutive 20+/20 games (each in OT) that were better, a couple others that were a little short of 20/20 but similar, and even his 23 &18 in the loss in the CAA Finals to UNCW was better than tonight. He was a beast that year. Great tonight, but several games two years ago that were better. That's not to discredit tonight at all, it's to give even more credit to some of those monster games as a sophomore.
In addition to points and rebounds, Gustys made 7 out of 9 field goals and had more assists than turnovers. It was the first time Hofstra won with Gustys having at least 15 points, at least 15 rebounds, and more assists than turnovers. Hofstra lost on November 25, 2017 at Siena and January 16, 2016 hosting James Madison when Gustys did that.

Hofstra had their best percentage shooting threes since they made 6 out of 9 in a 93-54 win hosting UNC Wilmington on January 27, 2010. That was 265 games ago.

I did not see game but was just looking at boxscore and noticed Trueheart only played 9 minutes. Did he suffer an injury ??

ST is fine. He started, early on got picked off and they hit a wide open 3 in the corner....Joe blew a gasket and pulled him. Then the identical play happened to start the second half.

I definitely agree, but UNCW was in man to man most of the game and we tore them apart. Last night was the perfect matchup for our offense. Before the game, I thought UNCW's athleticism may help them keep it closer, but they have the 326th rated defense in the country, and we saw why.

The inconsistent nature of our performances this year has largely been based on the situational matchups we have seen. Most of the time when we have a bad offensive or defensive performance, it's because the opposition has a highly rated defense or offense; or they play a tough zone, and we struggle getting the ball inside, and have better looks on the perimeter, etc.

As the season has gone on, I think we've done a better job not turning the ball over, and keeping the forwards involved. Rok is at 64.4 field goal percentage this year in conference play. We're trending upwards in the last 10 games, IMO.
Jojogunne wrote:Now that we played so well in the throwback uniforms, we’re going to have to wear them for the rest of the season. :)

Eli said the key that opened up his game offensively (with the game-high 27 pts) last night was a result of make a concerted effort to do the little things, including crashing the boards (his 4 offensive boards matched Rok for a game-high). That's no small thing. It should be a very valuable lesson learned for everyone up and down the roster. If you're not that involved, get yourself involved. Do the little things, be aggressive, and it can open up other aress of your game.

True, and all the wins count the same when the final standings are sorted out at the end of February, and really, that's all that matters (which is why I had no problem with the ugly road win at Delaware). That said, they put up 96 points and shot amazing 63%, including a sizzling 11 of 17 from 3 last night. But it is very noteworthy that they did it against the team that was allowing the most ppg (83.5) in the CAA. So Rood is right to say we shouldn't read too much into it. That said, this team can score a lot and efficiently enough against even the much better defenses in the CAA when it plays the way it played last night -- with JWF allowing the game to come to him, being efficient (23 pts on 9/13 fg) and several others contributing a lot more. When it's all on JWF, and he has to score 30+ pts shooting in the low 40s, and others aren't nearly involved as they were last night, that's when they'll struggle a lot more. Play offense with last night's more team-wide approach and play solid enough defense rather than the lacking D we've seen at times in the past this year, and they'll be fine. There's no VCU, Mason or ODU playing in Richmond anymore (even though the conference favorite will be playing in Charleston) anymore. Charleston good, and tough at home (or very near home in the tourney), but it's not like it was before. There's not a team in the league they can't beat this year if they stick to what works and don't stray from it.

Somewhat related- just stopped by the bookstore, and they are basically sold out of EVERYTHING Flying Dutchmen. A few small sizes left of the t-shirts and hoodie, but that's it. Said what's left will be at the Saturday game, and that they're going to re-order a bunch of stuff, including the hoodie in a different color, and a crew neck sweatshirt. Hopefully the popularity leads to at least a few more throwback efforts, at the very least.

I was thinking the same thing. If it's that popular, that merchandise is selling out, give the fans what they want and return to the old name and branding.

My 2 cents on last nights game

Great game for EP - worked hard in all aspects of the game, and it paid off. After last year, this is the type of game that I thought we would see more of this year. Keep it up!

Great Game for RG - Going to the hoop strong, nice to see. Clearing boards as usual. One thing I noticed that last few games is when Roks match-up guy (last night DC) sets a screen, Rok is really going out of his way to step out and pick up and help out our guy getting screened. It seems to just stop the other guard in his tracks. A soon as its clear that the guard is not going to penetrate, RG hurries back to guard his own man, and our guard has the time needed to get back on his own man. It has really helped stop the penetration and stopped the opposition from shooting right behind the screen. Its really working well the last few games. I've said it before and I gotta say it again - just love Roks short turnaround bank shot.

Another good thing to see is JM all over ST for poor defense. If ST gets beat because of speed or a pick that's one thing, but he was getting beat only because he was not within 10-15 feet of his guy. Ended up with absolutely wide open three's. I like ST and I think he's an asset - my point is that its good to see JM getting pissed about poor defense.

Big test tomorrow. Really looking forward to a solid game. Hope the "good" team shows up. ;)

Good points Cards ROK is looking like an entirely different player and he has improved incrementally from the foul line. He comes up with steals or creates them with ball deflections. He is playing near the top of his game IMO and with Pemberton reinventing himself we could be the team to beat. Let's see if we can keep Chealey and Riller in check tomorrow. BTW nobody mentioned JR even though he only had three points in this game he played very solid defense. He's very aggressive and could be a difference maker as we head down the stretch as could ST. He's been burned and Joe has sent an emphatic message to everyone on this team that the time for free passes is over. Everyone is going to be accountable and Joe looks like he's almost taking the breakdowns in D personally. I like the comments about the Flying Dutchmen and hope it makes a comeback.

Agree with everything being said. I must have said “where has this team been all year?” at least five times to my brother during the game. Best performance of the year IMO.

Eli played smart and with passion. Worked hard and was all over the court Rok played VERY strong (I feel he hasn’t been for much of the season). Went hard to the hoop and played good D. Big reason Cacock struggled. JWF had a quiet 23 but it allowed him to be more efficient. Was great to see him pushing Eli and showing the leader he has become.

Great to see Buie’s 10 assists. I really wanted to mention Wormley though. Thought this was his best game. I noticed that he did a lot of his damage as the 2 (I guess?) when they went small. He was on the court with Buie a few times. I know that’s not the backup PG we were hoping for but maybe this is where he can be more useful. Was interesting to see.
