So if you want to blame him for me being on be my guest. Bull fan is Uncles Bucks godfather to his children. Wish we had them back on the boards.
That makes one of you. Personally glad they're both gone.

Thanks Shadow! I am excited to be part of this group!!
My support for the HU program will always be strong. In 1974, as an All-Long Island HS player, I had many opportunities to leave LI and play elsewhere. AND, HU had no D-1 basketball history. Every reason to be negative about HU basketball.
But, Coach Gaeckler's blind enthusiasm attracted 5-star talent like Rich Laurel, John Irving and Bernard Tomlin (all eventual NBA-picks). With that nucleus, I saw an opportunity to 'play a role', and along with Pat Kammerer, our starting 5 was complete! Two NCAA-tourney's later, we made HU history!
It all started with that blind enthusiasm that Coach instilled through worst (8-16 1974), better (13-17, 1975) and best (1976-77 titles).

I see most of the pieces in this team that can bring HU it's 3rd NCAA bid:

JWR - in the same category as Laurel, Claxton and Jenkins
Gustys - best big man at HU since John Irving!
The Pieces - the 76/77 teams had Tomlin, Rood Kammerer, the 2000 team had Richardson, Hernandez, Gittens, and a young freshman in Apodaca.

I see soooo many similarities with guys like Pemberton, and our freshman next important - Ray. The staff is working hard to find the remaining few pieces at PG and #4 spot.

But, what will carry the day will be that blind enthusiasm and positive energy.

I hope our blog can support that effort!

I like your enthusiasm and optimism Ken and just want u to know I saw a lot of games back in those years 76/77. Even went to the Palestra to see u guys battle Notre Dame thanks for the memories. We'll see how it all pans out this year some of the pieces of the puzzle seem to be a bit tight but there's definitely promise here.

Thanks!
ND was a tough draw - they had 9 5-star players and Digger Phelps with 15 NCAA tourney appearances. Down 7 at HT, played them even in the 2nd half.
The real missed oppty was 1976, up vs, UCONN by 16 at halftime.... loss in OT. Still have nightmares about that one!

The UCONN game was a killer but someone I won't mention his name told me u guys were celebrating in the locker room at the half figuring this game was in the win column!! I also remember Irving hitting a shot at the end of regulation that would have won the game but it was ruled after the buzzer. Is my memory accurate?? My recollection in the ND game was that Irving got into foul trouble and wound up fouling out which hurt our chances! Still very exciting teams and good memories.

lol, sheez, guess I better follow up here before some of you softies have a conniption.

Just breaking some chops, joshin with the young fella. I'm sure HUclassof19 can handle it, at least according to his self-proclaimed toughness :P

All joking aside, truly welcome aboard - we absolutely need all the fans we can get, especially the current student kind. Hope you are here for the long-haul, and can bring some students with you - spread the word!!!

Would LOVE to hear your thoughts on why there is so little interest and such apathy among students in regards to the hoops program (and HU athletics in general). If you have some thoughts, would be great to start a fresh thread on that topic - it's been a BIG one around here for many years.

krood, it is awesome having you here man, thanks for taking the time to dive right in. Look forward to meeting you in person to shake your hand.

Ken, thanks for joining, sharing your upbeat assessment and most of all the joy and excitement your teams brought to us Hofstra fans. The ND game I believe was a very credible 90-83 loss against a very
talented team. As you said the painful one was UConn. I was at the NCAA wrestling championships at ASU at the time when scores were announced. Nick Gallo and Don Mayorga were both 6th seeds with
even better potential. Both lost in the 1st round, Gallo to a kid from Boise St.. A very depressing day indeed. When I ran across Bob Getchell he was utterly catatonic. Of course Nick became Hofstra's only national champion the next year when I wasn't there. He ran through the field so impressively he was selected OW.
Although I have been on these boards since before Uncle Buck and attended more Hofstra sporting events BEFORE I entered Hofstra in 1955 than 99% of our fans have in total you have inspired just my 2nd post. I have the history to provide some institutional memory but unfortunately not the recall. Although Evan is quite masterful at dredging up pertinent data and setting the record straight so I may enter the frey a bit more often. I did attend the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, the tourneys in Estero and Charleston and will post a few of my thoughts on this years team at another time.

I'm sure Ken u know who was spilling the beans but being privy to these anecdotes back in the day makes for great conversation. I wonder if u remember a game I believe on the 77 team where u played Wagner in S.I. and the reffing was less then stellar. We wound up losing which was amazing in and of itself but Gaeckler flipped out on a ref call and threw a chair out on the court!! I remember this game pretty well because despite having a fever and winding up with pneumonia I had to go. The fact that we lost this game was hard to swallow since we had such a good team!!

Hofstra has the box scores from their NCAA Tournament games. Irving and Kammerer fouled out, but they didn't keep track of as many statistics then, so it doesn't say how many minutes they played.

Thank you. I research statistics but I don't have memories of watching old games (some of them before I was born) like some of you. I remember being a fan in the season before the America East titles in 1998-1999. The first game I went to was a 70-69 loss to Stony Brook on December 13, 2003 when I was a freshman. I like supporting local teams as opposed to people in Nassau County supporting St. John's or a school they have no connection to because the team is good.

I didn't realize that u were such a young in Evan but I won't hold it against u. Lol I'm sure Rood had some recollection about when Irving fouled out but I believed he played most of the second half?? I can tell u I heard him from the stands (Irving) yelling to the refs after he was called for a foul "C'Mon Ref let us play the game" because I was sitting close to courtside to the best of my recollection and the Palestra is not that big. It was 40 years ago so don't hang me if my recollection is not that accurate about the Palestra.

My recollection apparently not very good the Palestra was a lot bigger then what I remember I guess too many bottles of wine over the years!!
