At least SBU isnt going dancing. Congrats to Tim Cluess. I wonder if he will get some offers from a P5 school.

Sickening. Another mid coach crushing JM in the results category. Granted Iona operates in La La Land and it is not fair at all to compare to HU, but it doesn't sting any less. Really sucks when a local community college level place is schooling the big bad HU left and right.

Now that is funny bobe13 - ya know, I think I'm finally starting to get your humor my man! :D

Unreal isn't it? I can already picture the blind narrative: "Don't worry guys, JM beat Siena back in regular season meaningless history land, so all is well! That basically means HU is / woulda / shoulda / coulda / transitively going dancing too!!"

Whoo. Hoo.

Bob is the smartest guy on the board. He warned us of a .500 season.

Get rid of Farrelly and bring in a Defensive Specialist since JM is staying put for a while.

I don't know who should go DC DUTCH, but I essentially said the same a few days ago on another thread. Since JM isn't going anywhere, bring in a def specialist and a guy who can coach bigs

Not meant to be funny, just stating some related facts, however if we were in the MAAC with everything else the same we would also be dancing.

Congrats to Iona, Cluess has brought that school to its full basketball potential.

Can we just join the MAAC already? Albany is so much closer than Charleston! Maybe it's an academic thing, I rather Hofstra associated with the CAA schools than the MAAC schools academically.

Adjusting staff is definitely another aspect that should absolutely be on the table.

Not sure who should be the target, whether it's Farrelly or Barrett (what exactly did he bring to the table??), but someone needs to be under the microscope. If it isn't JM who goes first, which I know it won't be, then he is on the hook to get his staff right and producing.

Speedy is doing his part IMO, rocking the recruiting trail, bringing legit credibility, and helping the guards elevate.

But somebody needs to do X's and O's and coach UP bigs. Who's it gonna be JM?? Because you and your staff clearly aren't getting either done in present form.

It's also the ranking aspect. It seems historically, the CAA has always been ranked higher than the MAAC. This year ESPN had us at 13, and the MAAC at 18. http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basket ... ording-bpi Some years the gap has been larger. But I do agree with the location. It makes much more sense. I certainly wouldn't mind throwing in a couple of more family road trips during the season. But, moving down in conferences is no way to gain the credibility that our program is so desperately trying to earn.

Here are the CAA and MAAC in the most recent five seasons' Conference RPIs:

2016-2017: CAA 11th, MAAC 16th
2015-2016: CAA 9th, MAAC 20th
2014-2015: CAA 19th, MAAC 21st
2013-2014: CAA 15th, MAAC 16th
2012-2013: MAAC 14th, CAA 22nd (the CAA had George Mason, Georgia State, and Old Dominion and Old Dominion won only 5 games)

The five season averages are 15.2 for the CAA and 17.4 for the MAAC. Starting with 2013-2014 when the CAA had 9 teams (Elon joined in 2014-2015), the averages are 13.5 for the CAA and 18.25 for the MAAC. The Patriot League, America East, and Northeast would be big steps down. Those conferences have not been in the top half of the Conference RPI in any of the last five seasons. The Ivy League is obviously unavailable. The MEAC has similar school locations to the CAA, but those are HBCUs (historically black colleges and universities). There is no perfect conference for Hofstra.

I don't believe our administration wants to be affiliated with the CAA. It affects our play in the conference in nearly every sport.

The prevailing theme with all our athletic teams seems to be that we're underfunded for our level. Even MBB, HUSID intimated in another thread that there is a restriction on the amount of scholarships the team could provide, below the NCAA max. It's pathetic, but it's a reality.

If we can move to the MAAC, our travel costs are cut significantly, new conference affiliation should be strongly considered to cut these costs.

From a pure basketball standpoint I used to think it mattered that the CAA is a superior conference to the MAAC or AEC, but the truth is the recruits don't seem to care. Our program is clearly not superior to Iona or Manhattan, despite better facilities and playing in a better conference. The on-court talent is similar. Conversely, look at Fordham, has an A-10 affiliation been a good thing for that program? Do the recruits really care at the end of the day? Maybe one or two players care, but the end result on the court says no, Fordham gets worked by everyone locally, and we think we're a better program than Fordham, despite their A-10 affiliation.

I agree with EvanJ, there's no real perfect conference for Hofstra. Pat League would be perfect if we still had a football program, but they're maxed out as a conference at this point anyway. I think a move to the MAAC or America East would be fine though, I mean it would initially bruise our ego, but we would get over it when our teams start qualifying for the NCAAT at higher clips. Plus it would be amazing for local rivalry games, it could actually get local people interested.

I'm curious to see how Hofstra continues to leverage the HB2 law in NC, they may use it as grounds for leaving the CAA. While the law itself is stupid and pointless, I think it's despicable how Hofstra has leveraged their student athletes to make some derivative political statement. Nevertheless, if it gets us out of the CAA, it may be worth it.

This is exactly why back on CAAZone, when we found out Pecora was leaving Hofstra just before the end of the 2009-10 season, I (and just a few others; some of you might recall) campaigned hard for Cluess to come to Hofstra.

Saw his success coming a long time ago.

His results at Iona speak for themselves:

2010–11 / 25–12 / CIT Runner–Up
2011–12 / 25–8 / NCAA First Four
2012–13 / 20–14 / NCAA Second Round
2013–14 / 22–11 / NIT First Round
2014–15 / 26–9 / NIT First Round
2015–16 / 22–11 / NCAA First Round
2016–17 / 22–12 / NCAA First Round

Hofstra was not willing to pay a seven figure ransom

Yeah, out of C.W. Post? They didn't have to break the bank for him.

They didn't even have to sign him long term initially.

Iona gave him a few short-term deals before finally giving him a longer one, once he proved himself at the D-I level. And even then, it's a bargain.

That's how it's done by up-and-coming mid-major programs.

Iona signed him in 2010, then resigned him in 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016, to extend him through 2020-21 on his current deal, at $501,638 per year.

No reason Hofstra couldn't have done the same.

Iona accepts nearly 90% of applicants which is horrible, might as well be a community college at that point. Have to wonder how good Cluess would do as a coach if the school had real admissions standards and wasn't able to accept every transfer that comes along. A lot of players at Iona probably get can't in anywhere else,
