Women's Basketball 2016-17

Post by ProudofPride »

Just beat Stony Brook at their place to move to 2-0 after opening the season with a big 20 point home win over Marist. Rough game tonight, but they still found a way to win. More importantly, that now moves Hofstra to 3-0 against Stony Brook this year, as men's soccer and volleyball also beat them earlier this year. WBB continuing to prove who Long Island's real team is.

Hofstra goes 1-1 in California, bouncing back from Friday's rough game against Sacramento State with a great win today against UC Davis. The aggies came into this game undefeated. Ashunae Durant had a great game with 14 points and 13 rebounds, she made her only 3-point attempt of the game, which was only the 2nd "3" of her career. Sandra Dongmo had 9 rebounds in only 12 minutes.

Lady Pride looking good... hiccup games happen, but so far, they are on a great track from what I see.

If anyone is looking for something to do at noon today, the women's game is on ESPN3. They take on Buffalo, coached by former Hofstra head coach Felisha Legette-Jack. HU destroyed them last year at the Mack, allowing less than 40 points and there was a margin of victory of about 30 points. Should be a much closer game this time.

Women trailing by 10 at half and by 7 after three quarters come back and defeat UMass 71-55. They outscored UMass 30-7 in the 4th quarter.

American got an offensive rebound and tied the game at 59 with 1.3 seconds left. Hofstra won 72-67 in overtime. Hofstra shot field goals horribly, but they had 11 more rebounds and 7 fewer turnovers, which led to 13 more field goals attempted and 9 more free throws attempted. Hofstra won at the free throw line by making 18 out of 22 (.818), while American made 3 out of 13 (.231). American's three-point field goal percentage was over double their free throw percentage!

Ashunae Durant led all players with 23 points and 12 rebounds and led Hofstra with 6 assists. She made 8 out of 15 field goals (.533) and her teammates made 15 out of 50 field goals (.300). Durant made all 7 of her free throws, and she played 40 minutes. Krystal Luciano scored 14 points, which was the second most on Hofstra and the fourth most in the game, and played 44 minutes. American had a player score 21 and a player score 20, but they combined to miss all 5 of their free throws. There was a six-way tie for the most turnovers with 3, and five of the six players were on American.

Good gut-check game for the team, ugly win that should never have been that close, but at this point a win is a win. The team has now won 10 consecutive home games dating back to last year. Sad that Coach Khan had to beg for more people to come to women's games in the post-game interview with WRHU.

Last OOC game is tomorrow, against University of Hartford at the Mack. Hofstra is currently 111 in the RPI, behind Elon (30) and Drexel (41). It's surprisingly ahead of perennial juggernaut JMU, who is currently 5th at 123.

We let Uhart's leading scorer go off and field day, she scored a career high 26 points and she only averages around 16, many of her points were completely uncontested. Defense was atrocious in the 4th quarter and in OT, we ended the 3rd quarter up 10, and ended losing by 2. Hartford's only lead the entire game was the shot gave them the lead in OT. We out-rebounded the hawks 53-31, which should win the game pretty easily, but that was cancelled out by our completely unacceptable 25 turnovers. Tough outing by our freshman point guard, who had to play a lot more than normal due to an injury to Luciano, she had 0 points, 0 assists, 7 turnovers, and 5 fouls in only 15 minutes. Luciano actually did re-enter the game 2 minute after leaving with the injury, but only played a few minutes after that and didn't return, hopefully it's nothing serious or this team could be in for a very long rest of the season. Not the way to head into conference play.

The women are in the same backwards tailspin as the men, they just blew a 13-point lead that they had in the 3rd quarter and lost to UNCW in OT at home. UNCW came into this game 0-5 in the conference and 5-11 overall. The Hofstra women are typically a pretty defensive focused team, but are currently dead last in defense for conference only games. HU now dropped to 1-4 in CAA play, which is very disappointing after their WNIT run last season.

Womens team starting to mirror the mens team.the struggle continues in conference play for this team. First off losing leading scorer Kelly Loftus to transfer and Angie white and Darius Faulk to graduation didnt help.problem #1 is we are not getting production out of the center position. This puts more pressure on Ashunae Durant to produce.Problem here is she is shooting only 32% in CAA games. Now this is from 15 ft in. She is only 5ft10 playing against 6ft2 players. At 5fr10 that is the height of shooting guards in this league. The bench is filled with freshmen and sophs. Hernandez Gill has not been playing (injury). This puts everything on Crystal Luciano our 5ft5 point guard. The effort is there from all the players but there is only so much the coaches can do. We outrebounded a taller Drexel team and got over 20 offensive rebounds but that was because we shot about 25% from the field.

The women just added a big time transfer, from University of Michigan. Too bad she can't play this year. 2X NY State player of the year and 3X LI player of the year. Krista has had several players transfer in from high major Achilles over the past few years, including Florida State and West Virginia. Congrats to her on finalizing the signing!

ESPN ranked her 4 stars and a grade of 94, 85th best player overall in the class of 2015 and the 27th best player for her position. http://www.espn.com/high-school/girls-b ... /id/151626

I don't know which team is worse to watch, Hofstra men or women. Literally no one on the women's team can figure out how to score the basketball effeciently. Ana Hernandez Gil is a big loss, she was a major offensive spark off the bench. After the first quarter against 5-win College of Charleston, we're down 20-10, after being tied 8-8. We're out-rebounding the cougars 15-9, but shooting 20% (4-20) from the field. Also pair that with 6 turnovers in the first 10 minutes, leading to 7 points for Charleston, that's basically a recipe for disaster.

Hofstra lost 71-55. Hofstra has lost 7 out of 8. Hofstra has scored 57 or fewer points in their last six losses. Before today, CAA teams were averaging exactly 63.85 points per game.

We are shooting as a team about 25%. You are not going to win many games that way. Also had 7 more turnovers than CofC. So even if we outrebound them by 14, it is still a recipe for disaster.
