Re: Looking Ahead to 2020-2021 season
So I know it is only speculation at this point but what is everyone's thoughts on a college basketball season this year? Delayed start? Conference only? I would assume any start would be without fans but would definitely be great if by the end of it hofstra could have fans in at least some capacity...

NYIT drops ALL sports

For at least the next two years (and I'm going to imagine beyond that), NYIT has gotten rid of their entire NCAA program.

Re: Looking Ahead to 2020-2021 season
But, at the same time, their expenses for this year will be way down. I don’t see teams (besides basketball, and even that’s a maybe) taking these long flights this year. And even if so, have you seen the prices for airline tickets right now? It’s $25 to fly from NY to Chicago.

Re: Looking Ahead to 2020-2021 season
As I discussed somewhere here, many of the sports are actually money makers for the school, by virtue of having more tuition coming in than they have in real expenses. Most teams aren't full scholarship- baseball for example has 11.7 scholarships but 33 guys on the team, 21.3x$45k=$$$. If you take o...

Re: Fall sports
It would put a really big strain on many athletic departments. A lot of SIDs work both seasons, stadiums and arenas are used both seasons, athletic trainers work both seasons. Bigger schools could swing it. Would really stretch some smaller DI schools.

Re: Fall sports
Many state school campuses are going to be closed this fall. If their campus is closed, there is no way they are going to have sports, with football (of course) being the exception for many, but I'm sure not all. I would venture to think that nearly every private school is going to attempt to open....

Re: 2020 Men's Lacrosse
I don't recall anyone mentioning this- this is the newly renovated locker room for men's lacrosse. https://gohofstra.com/news/2020/1/17/mens-lacrosse-mlax-hofstra-unveils-new-locker-room.aspx It's definitely not the facilities that should be keeping anyone from coming to Hofstra. To compare, here is...

Re: What a shame
One other thing I missed- along with announcing men's hockey, LIU also added a women's gymnastics program to start competition this fall. Likely done to balance some of the Title IX, but still interesting that when everyone else is cutting, they keep adding.

Re: What a shame
To HofstraHockey, Sill difficult to believe that the funds are available for what will be 26 programs over two campuses. Did you have any idea that LIU was interested in starting a hockey program? Well, when they added a women's team, it was kind of seen as a precursor to a men's team. But nobody, ...

Re: What a shame
OK, I just looked up both LIU and HU's endowments, and HU is way ahead of LIU. Where is this funding coming from in this time of CoViD? Private colleges are concerned about cutting various programs. Do they really expect to generate interest on the Brookville or Brooklyn campus for games possibly s...

Re: What a shame
Fair enough Stu - but how do schools like Quinnipiac, Clarkson, Denver, RIT, and even Union College carry hockey and other sports? They are smaller than Hofstra (not sure about Denver) with smaller endowments I suspect. How do other schools invest in athletics with football, hockey and more and HU ...

Can't think of any. But I do know that former NBA all-star Kenny Anderson (now a D3 coach), his daughter (whose mother is DJ Spinderella from Salt-N-Peppa) graduated from Hofstra a few years ago, although she didn't play anything.

Re: Will the NCAA reduce
Golf is one of those sports that has a high cost (all of the greens fees) without any return whatsoever. While field hockey is a bigger team size, they have the facilities on campus already, equipment is relatively minimal, and it's at least an on-campus activity that may draw some people in. Don't ...
